not so much running

I have finished two - hundred mile goals since my last post. I am not doing much running because I can't get past my knee problem but I have not been deterred. I do as much running as I am comfortable with plus I walk fast, ride my bike, and swim plus some weight training. Today I did 30 minutes on the eliptical machine at the gym, and 15 minutes of walking.

First run in new shoes

This mornings run was like floating on air. My legs felt so pampered in these new shoes. I am happy to be making headway on my goal.

I have been doing the Daily 16 for my strength exercises and like them but I need to find a way to ramp it up. They are too easy. I guess I could just do more of them. Tomorrow I will do more and see if that does it. I am interested in the Body For Life way of doing weights but I remember it taking a long time and needing lots of equipment, neither of which I have very much of. I need to go to the library and check out the book again. I used to own it but loaned it out and have not seen it again.

New Shoes!!!!

New Shoes!!! New Shoes!!!

I am so excited to go on a run!!!
Now I have shoes that should address some of the problems I have been having so hopefully my mileage can get better and better.

I am at mile 31 on my goal and am getting more confident with each mile. When I have been able to wear 'rested' shoes, my knees have not had problems. These new shoes will be reserved just for running so they will always be fresh. Yes!

My vision is to be able to 'run and not be weary' for miles and miles. I don't care how fast I go. For some reason I just feel good when I run.

Happy me will write in again after a test run in the new shoes.

Interval Training

I have been interested in doing interval training like in the book Body For Life. I do not lead a life that has hours of time built in for exercise. The reason I exercise is for the health benefits, to push myself, and because I just plain like to see what I am capable of.

Today I only went a mile but I pushed myself in that mile. (I am at 10 miles on my 100 mile goal). I warmed up for 5 minutes and then jogged to the count of 60 and then walked to the count of 60, repeating until the mile was done. It was not hard to do this and my knees feel great.

I can't find my Body For Life book and I can't remember if I am supposed to do cardio every day or not. I will do some research. I like the interval training because you push yourself for the 20 minutes that you exercise. You don't have to keep adding miles or time when you plateau. You are constantly doing better within the 20 minutes that you have.

I am going to get my extra miles for my goal by taking walks with the kids and doing the Daily 16.

7-04-09

Today I am at 7 miles on my goal to 100. I tried jogging today but my knees were painful. I have been wearing my shoes all day every day so I wonder if that is part of the problem. I need an extra pair of shoes so I can trade them off from day to day. I have read that shoes need a 'day of rest' to come back to their full spring. My heels were uncomfortable today too so the unspringiness of my shoes may be the culprit. I did fine jogging yesterday though.

I am still doing the Daily 16 and feel myself growing stronger. I can do more of the exercises now that when I started.

100 MILES!!!!

I hit the 100 mile mark - Yay!! Balloons and Confetti for me!!!
Instead of a microphone I opted for hiking boots that I needed badly. I was blessed with a microphone just after I decided to do that, so I got both in the end!

This time I am going for a hundred miles but the difference will be that the faster I get it done the bigger the prize will be. If I finish in July I will get $100.00. If it is in August it will be $50.00, and if it goes until September it will be $25.00. Nothing after that. So here goes.

daily 16

It has taken me a while but I have made it to 90 miles. I have put exercise into our school schedule every day so the past 3 days have seen me out on the road. Today Sister(our Bernese Mountain Dog) pulled my 2 year old for the first mile and then jogged with me the second mile. Yes, that's right, I jogged a mile and a half today with no knee pain. I warmed up before we went, and stretched when I got home. I also wore my good Saucany(sp?) shoes. I think all of those things are making a difference. I am also following an exercise program from the military called the Daily 16. I figure that they are in pretty good shape so I couldn't go wrong doing what they do. I understand that with the conditioning exercises they also run 3 miles. I am working up to it. I am doing 10 of each conditioning exercise on a different exercise card each day. I will add 5 to it each week until I think that I am doing enough or until something changes. I am all about change! Here is a link to the site http://www.usmc-mccs.org/display_files/Daily16.pdf

experiment

I got some advise this weekend from a runner who has had surgeries on his knees. He runs without his heels ever touching the ground. He said it gives your knees less impact. I tried it and found that it is entirely possible to run that way but because it is so different I will have to start slow. After not very long my shins were on fire. I am going to keep experimenting with it and see how it goes.

I have not had any more miles to record. I have walked several miles but they were not aerobic. My brother in law was married Saturday, and I have been cleaning houses. Because of these, my schedule has once again gone off track. I just have to keep going and be flexible.

This last week

This past set of days off with my husband, we packed for the day and went hiking around Burnt Lake. We walked a couple of miles and then found a spot to fish and cook lunch on a fire. It was fun and our kids did great on the hike which means oh so many more similar hikes in our future! I have been getting up each morning and walking/jogging 2 to 4 miles. My 5 year old has been coming with me and has surprised me with his stamina.

I found that the shoes do make the difference. I wore my good Saucony shoes and was able to jog for a mile.

I am at 80 miles on my 100 mile goal. Go Me!

Saturday

My legs were sore from Friday's exercise. Yay!

Saturday I walked and jogged 3 miles with Sister pulling her cart. She did awesome with her pulling. I can tell she likes it because when I got out the cart she ran over and sat between the traces.

I wore my newer shoes and I think that made a big difference. All totaled I jogged about 1/2 a mile out of the 3 miles with zero knee pain. What a relief! I am going to keep working up slowly because I have learned too many times that when I do too much too soon, I pay for it with hurt knees. Then it takes forever for them to heal and I have to start all over again.

Every time I have tried to start running again in the last 2 years I have gotten a schedule made up from the running books that I study. I follow it exactly and do too much. This time I am going to get myself out there each day(except Sunday) and run when my body tells me to and walk when I need to.

walk with the dog

I walked 3 miles with my dog sister. She pulled her cart while we walked. The first mile we went without her cart and she was all over the road. When she was pulling her cart she walked in a straight line. Interesting. She got pretty tired the last mile so it will do some good for her to build up her mileage. We can build up together! I tried jogging for a minute but had to stop when my knees started hurting. I will keep trying and see what comes of it.
Later in the day I did 15 minutes of stair stepping followed by another mile of walking. I started a club for my boys where we read books about great men and learn about Indians. Right now we are reading about Geronimo and the Apaches. They ran 4 miles with a mouth full of water as one of their 'manhood' tests. We simplified it to running 1 mile with a mouth full of water. We all practiced today by walking a mile with the mouth full. I passed a man riding his 4 wheeler and had to just wave and smile with my mouth closed. Awkward. The most difficult part about it wasn't the need to have some water, but the pressure on the cheeks for a mile. I finished the day with 15 minutes of strength exercises.

Let's Begin

I have been working towards my goal of 100 miles. I am at 62 miles after doing a mixture of biking, walking, and jogging. When I get to 100 miles I get a good microphone.
